Only 3?!

Mia Garlock
List three books that have had an impact on you. Why?

I mean, the real obvious one is A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J Maas. This blog and my work outs came from it, and my entire life has been irrevocably changed forever. I have a Barnes & Noble special edition paperback that has the signatures of Valkyries from the Colorado trip in its pages and I look at it every now and then and smile so big my face hurts.

The Science of Mind by Ernest S. Holmes, an old book and author that few have probably heard of. This book is educational, so its very much a read and pause and reflect situation. As I was reading, I gathered a new perspective and was able to stop overanalyzing and being hyper critical of myself and my life, and those around me. This book enabled me to look at things as happening, but not happening to me, and it changed my narrative, which has been crucial in fighting my anxiety and depression. There is some religious speech in this book, but not preaching, more like… a scientific explanation of faith and belief, and it allowed me to release some trauma from my childhood surrounding the church and things said to me that were damaging to my sense of self. While not an easy read, I found it helpful.

Harry Potter by JK Rowling. Those books were my escape in a childhood filled with anxiety, dread, and constantly being in fight or flight mode. Harry’s sense of justice and loyalty made me feel like I wasn’t alone, and Luna Lovegood’s quirky brand of everything made me proud to be different from my peers. I know her reputation has since tanked and she’s said some terrible things, but those books provided me a safe space when I had none and I’ll love them forever.
