Day 58: Ugh, a cold
After days of wrestling with the cold that has ensnared my kids, barely sleeping, or doing anything besides caring for my kids; my husband and I are both, now sick.
Last night he quickly built up a fever and some sturdy congestion over the course of a few hours. I had a headache for most of the day, but attributed it to the exhaustion. I’ve been taking all the remedies, as soon as my kids symptoms showed up I was boosting my immune system.
This morning, I woke at almost 9am, and still felt fatigue in every limb, my head felt a bit spacy, and my ears were stuffy. I groaned, knowing what this means. I’ve spent all day feeling like a sneeze that won’t come, extra tired, headache, pressure in my sinuses and ears. I know that it’s the first stages of this cold, and its just rooting in.
My best friend ran to the store to get some local honey and tea for me, I sipped bone broth and ate tons of garlic on sourdough toast. Garlic has been recognized for a long time as a cold remedy in a wide variety of places, and my Italian roots came out today as I smashed fresh garlic into my toast at breakfast. I drank elderberry and cranberry juice, and immune support tea with some of that local honey too.
I had a hearty pot of stew simmering away on the stove by 2:00pm, loaded with root vegetables like Turnips and and Rutabaga, high in vitamin A, bone broth full of minerals, and pork I raised on my farm last year.

I also made myself some cough syrup; I finely minced some fresh ginger root, and chopped up some fresh herbs from the garden, thyme and oregano. Ginger for its immune boosting and cootie killing properties, thyme for its expectorant, oregano to fight infections. I added some cinnamon for its heating abilities as a warming spice, and lemon juice for its antibacterial acids. And then poured that local raw honey right over it all. It’s a bit spicy, but effective at cold care. I’ll be adding it to all my tea, and eating it by the spoonful until this cold is gone.

Hot steamy showers full of eucalyptus and lavender, my softest pajamas, and a day spent laying around the house, is all today has been about. Hopefully my symptoms don’t get too unbearable and I can kick this crud quickly.
