Daily Mace

Mia Garlock

There are parts of my arms that are always sore these days. Ever since I started Mace training last week, they’ve been in a constant, steady state of soreness. My core muscles too, are a little achy in areas pretty much always.

I’ve reached new levels of engagement in my shoulders and lats, from squaring my arms so much during flag presses. Making sure my shoulders don’t round forward when pressing the mace away from me has been a challenge, but important to form and muscle engagement. Even the muscles in my hands have been sore every other day.

Mace to me, feels like one of those tools that can completely change your muscle engagement. With core strength, improved balance and correct compensation issues, and just working the entire body. The weight displacement of the bell being farthest away from the midline challenges the movements and muscles to compensate and move the bell evenly. Every move with a mace is a core move.

Mace work today was some fun spins with the mace from one hand to the next, and they’re great. They also make a variety of muscles in the hands and forearms really sore. And then step back lunges, which I added lateral lunges to, for variety, because I couldn’t handle two moves only without going crazy. My legs were shaking by the end of it and my hands were exhausted. I was exhausted.

I did a lot of stretching, core reset, and hip mobility before I did mace work today. I’m really feeling the slow down right now and my body isn’t real big on a lot of intensity. My mace work out was almost too much, so I didn’t push it beyond getting that done today.

I finished some reading work and took a quiz today, and then got right back into reading some more once I passed. Stopped and took a break to start dinner, and I’m getting right back to it tonight. I have goals to crush and things to do!
